Charleston Animal Society has been preventing cruelty to animals since 1874 and is South Carolina’s oldest and most awarded charity.

Abigail Appleton, PMP, CAWADirector
Abigail Appleton joined Charleston Animal Society in 2016 to lead the No Kill South Carolina initiative. Previously she spent 10 years in senior management at the Humane Society of Pinellas in Clearwater, FL, including 6 years as Director of Operations and 3 years as special projects manager. She led the shelter’s participation in the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge, started a pet retention referral program, developed wellness and mobile spay-neuter clinics, and more. She was a founding board member of MEOW Now, a nonprofit aimed at bringing TNVR to Pinellas County; this involved working with county officials to amend local ordinances in addition to building the organization itself. Abigail has experience as a humane law enforcement officer and ACO and has taught emergency animal sheltering to disaster volunteers. Additionally, she is a Project Management Professional and Certified Animal Welfare Administrator, and has studied nonprofit business management at the graduate level. Abigail lives in Charleston with two adopted dogs, a cat, and a blind parrot.

Becca Boronat, BVM (ECFVG Candidate)Project Manager
Becca Boronat graduated as a Veterinarian at Marilia University in Brazil in 2003, she also did one year of veterinary training at Liverpool University in the UK and she has 15 years of experience in Small Animal Practice and Animal Welfare. She did a Master on Career and Executive Counseling at the Foundation of Administration Institute in Brazil in 2013 and her executive experience involves 10 years of Executive and Career Coaching, Leadership and Change Management. Becca moved to the USA in 2013 started dedicating her time exclusively to animal causes. She got a Non-profit Management Certificate at Winthrop University in 2016. Before joining the No Kill South Carolina team in 2017, Becca worked as Pawmetto Lifeline’s Spay Neuter Clinic Manager and Humane Society of York County’s Director of Operations. Becca is a vegan, animal advocate, veterinarian, executive, consultant and mom of a rescued dog.
